Growth and Innovation Fund

The Growth and Innovation Fund (GIF) helps employers to develop their own innovative skills solutions which have the potential to transform growth in their sector, region or supply chain.

Strategic leadership for the Fund rests with the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) and the Skills Funding Agency (the Agency). Representatives from these organisations and the Department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) make up the GIF Board which oversees the fund.

For the next phase of GIF, we are aligning the fund alongside the Employer Ownership Pilot, encouraging employers to bring forward powerful, integrated, proposals for industrial partnerships to take wider responsibility for skills development in a place or sector.

As well as covering the cost of training places (as supported by the first round of Employer Ownership Pilot), these proposals may include investment in underpinning arrangements to ensure skills needs are better met, such as new employer networks, skills frameworks and training delivery mechanisms (as supported by GIF). Potential applicants will now be able to engage with a single process to put forward these integrated proposals, rather than having to apply separately to both funds.

January 2013

The Growth and Innovation Fund (GIF) is currently supporting 41 employer-led projects aimed at levering in greater investment in the skills our economy needs to fulfill its growth potential. Public investment in this portfolio of projects stretches out to 2014-15.
